Three steps

Two minutes, start to hello.

There's nothing to configure: no accounts to create, no keys to paste. Here's exactly what you'll see.

  1. Open the file you downloaded

It's in your Downloads folder, or at the bottom of your browser. Double-click it.

  2. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”

Windows shows this for new apps that haven't been through Microsoft's signing yet. The beta installer isn't code-signed with Microsoft yet; the full release will be.

Questions

Good to know.

Is it safe to click “Run anyway”?

Yes. That warning appears for any new app until it has built up a reputation with Microsoft or carries a paid signing certificate. xoop's beta doesn't have one yet; the full release will. Only download xoop from this page.

What does it cost?

Nothing during the beta. Each person has a daily allowance; xoop tells you if you reach it, and it resets every night.

How do I update it?

You don't have to. xoop looks for an update every half hour, checks that it's signed by us, and downloads it in the background. When it's ready, choose “Restart to update”, or it installs by itself once you've been away from your PC for a while and xoop isn't busy. A task cut off by the restart picks up where it left off.

How do I uninstall it?

Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps → xoop → Uninstall. Your data stays in your user folder (“.xoop-next”) in case you come back. To remove that too, use You → Privacy & data → Delete everything in xoop first.

Is there a Mac version?

Not yet. xoop runs on Windows 10 and 11 for now.

Can I use it from my phone?

Yes. In xoop on your computer, open You → Notifications & phone → Use xoop on your phone, scan the code, and check both screens show the same four digits. It opens xoop in your phone's browser, no app store needed. Your computer does the work; what you send while it sleeps runs when it wakes.
